Cast Iron Pipes

It is a type of earthing electrode made of cast iron material.
Used to safely discharge leakage current into the ground.
  • Material
  • Traditional type made from gray iron.

    Strong, brittle, and corrosion-resistant.

  • Size – Common sizes:
  • Length: 2 mtrs to 3 mtrs

Diameter: 50 mm to 150 mm.

Thickness: 3 mm to 5 mm (or more).

  • Coating
  • Often coated with bitumen, paint, or galvanization to protect from rust.

  • Working
  • The pipe is placed vertically in the ground, surrounded by non corrosive higroscopic back fill earthing compound

Leakage current flows from electrical installation → into the cast iron pipe → dissipates safely into the soil.

  • Advantages
  • Strong and durable compared to GI (galvanized iron) pipes.

Suitable for high current earthing systems (transformers, DG sets, industries).

  • Limitations
  • Heavier than GI or copper pipes.

In highly corrosive soil (acidic/alkaline), copper electrodes perform better.
